Old Harby maps: help

There are three ways of viewing old maps of Harby on this website. In one, the maps are superimposed on more modern mapping, with a slider you can use to vary their transparency. In the second, old and new maps are displayed side-by-side on a split screen, with the position of the mouse cursor displayed as a cross on the second map to allow detailed comparison. The third option allows interactive modification of the parameters used to image lidar data from the area; the dynamic lidar image is overlaid on a choice of background map, which can be revealed using the transparency slider. The map viewers can be toggled to and from fullscreen mode by clicking on the icon in their top right hand corner. If a map doesn't display when selected, try zooming out until it does and then zooming back in again.

The colour lidar images assign the colours dynamically based on the range of elevations encountered in the area currently being viewed. In the equal-interval map a rainbow of colours (blue-low to red-high) are distributed in a linear fashion between the minimum and maximum elevations occurring within the area. With the equal-area map this palette is assigned non-linearly such that each colour covers the same area. The equal-area approach generally provides a more pleasing appearance, but it is advisable to toggle between the two modes to gain the best understanding of elevation variations.
Mobile phones
The map viewers do not work effectively on mobile phones in portrait mode because of the overlap of the controls but they are useable in fullscreen mode in landscape orientation. It is advisable to switch to fullscreen (by tapping on the top-right icon) before rotating your phone.
